License Plate Installed Higher. I read on the Internet that the plate is susceptible to getting bent from the back tire. I made a sub frame to mount the plate to that raised it and gave it more rigidity. I also made a plate for the Off-Road registration that attaches to two of the bolts that hold on the fender. Done on 3/27/04
Mirror Isolators. Its pretty hard to see behind you with just the stock mirrors. These make a world of difference. Done on 4/03/04
DSR Fuse Relocation. The stock fuses are located under the seat. If you blow a fuse, you have to remove both side covers and then the seat. The stock fuses are the old glass type, this kit not only relocates the fuses to the starter relay cover, but uses the newer ATO type fuses. Ordered the kit from Totally Wired Cycles. Done on 4/07/04
MasterGuard. The rear brake master cylinder is open and exposed. To solve this potential weak point, I installed a MasterGuard from Dual Star. Done on 04/13/04
Low Profile Magnetic Drain Plug. I installed a Magnetic Drain Plug from Dual Star. Although it maybe not really be needed, it is cheap insurance from getting bashed from a rock, and it will keep any metal shavings from floating around the engine if the filter doesn't pick them up. Installed on 05/14/04.
PumpGuard and RadGuard. On the KLR the water pump is vulnerable from a drop to the right., and the radiator is vulnerable from a drop on the left side. To fix these problems I installed a PumpGuard and a RadGuard from Dual Star. Done on 05/19/04.
Nut Kits. I installed several different nut kits from Dual Star. Done on 05/19/04.
New Tires The stock rear tire on the KLR isn't the best tire out there. It last on average for about 2000 miles. Mine lasted a little over this and is now bald in the center. I found a set, front and rear, of Kenda K270's from Rocky Mountain MC for $66.11 including shipping.
Brake Bracket. Replaced the weak stock aluminum cast brake bracket with a billet aluminum one from Dual Star. Done on December 25, 2004.
Garmin etrex Legend GPS. I got a new GPS for Christmas and will use it in place of my older non-mapping GPS. Done December 25, 2004.
LightGuard. This is an 80 mil thick stick on vinyl light protector. I looked into getting the "wire mesh" light guards, but don't like the looks of them. I got this from Dual Star. Done on 12/26/2004
MufflerGuard. This is a better heat shield than the stock shield. I use the Wolfman Alpha pack system, so don't really need this but it looks a lot better than the stock shield. I got this from Dual Star. Done on 1/8/2005
Shark Fin. The Shark Fin from Big Cee Engineering is for protecting the rear brake disk. Done on 1/8/2005
Clutch and Kickstand Bypass Switch. The kickstand lockout switch is a known weak spot on the KLR, this kit from Totally Wired Cycles fixes that problem and gives you a clutch bypass so you can also start the bike while in gear. Done on 1/8/2005
Eagle Manufacturing Balancer Lever. The only weak part of the KLR engine is the balance lever and spring. I replaced mine with a set from Eagle Manufacturing that I got from Arrowhead Motorsports. Done on 4/16/2005.
Skid Plate. The stock skid plate is made from a hard plastic and has huge holes in it that allow rocks to hit the engine case. I've seen pictures and heard stories of the case actually getting broken. I got my skid plate from Dual Star. Done on 5/31/2005
Shift lever. The stock shift lever is made of thin stamped steel and rolled over for strength. I've known several people that have bent and or broken there's with just one dump on the right side. I got a better one from Dual Star. Done on 5/31/2005
Subframe Bolt Upgrade. The stock subframe bolts are very anemic to say the least, and when you use your KLR loaded down with luggage or someone on the back, it can really stress them. I bought my subframe upgrade kit from Big Cee Engineering. Done on 6/25/2005.
Fan Fuse Kit. I upgraded the main fuses to ATO type fuses in April 2004. To keep everything the same and eliminate the last glass fuse on the bike I upgraded the fan fuse with a blade type fuse from Totally Wired Cycles. Done on 6/25/2005.
Carburetor "Y" Mod. The KLR can stall while making a water crossing, or when riding in hard rain. To prevent this I put a "Y" inline with the Carb vent and ran it up under the seat so when the lower end of the vent get clogged from water, the carb can still vent. Done on 7/23/2005.
Progressive Front Fork Springs All that I can say about these is WOW! what a difference these make! Done on December 22, 2005
LED Brake Light The LED brake light really makes the bike stand out when your applying the brake, it is q lot brighter than the stock light and it also strobes for a couple of seconds when you first apply the brake. Done on December 22, 2005
Dual Star Security Oil Filler Cap This is more for looks than for security as my bike is never really in "danger" of being messed with. Done on December 22, 2005
Tank Panniers and Bag I got the Wolfman Tank Panniers for Christmas, and when I was down at the Kawasaki shop to get oil for my new fork springs I found a tank bag on clearance for $10 so I bought that also. Done on December 22, 2005
Brake Saver Not sure if I will ever really need this, but it was cheap and easy to do and maybe it will save me from having to replace the brake petal someday. Done on December 22, 2005
Moose Racing Hand Guards The stock hand guards do nothing for protecting your hands or controls from anything other than leaves and very small brush, and they are a huge sail to make a lot of turbulence for the rider. I got these from the local Kawasaki shop and I am very pleased with the way they look. Done on December 22, 2005
Garage Door Opener Got tired of always pulling up to the garage door and turning off the bike to use the key to open the door. I finally got me a spare remote and hard wired it onto the bike. Done on March 26, 2006.
